A Playful Take on Love, Missed Connections, and a Summer Full of Hope
Pop artist and quarter finalist of 2024’s season of La Voix, Charles Goelen returns with “Mais t’es où?”, a catchy, self-aware single that blends pop melodies with candid storytelling. Written in the early summer of 2024, “Mais t’es où?” (“But where are you?”) began as an attempt at a feel-good summer anthem. But instead of heading in a purely upbeat direction, Goelen found himself writing a tongue-in-cheek reflection on his own dating misadventures/
“It started as a joke, really,” he says. “I was trying to write a happy pop song and stumbled on the phrase ‘Mais t’es où?’ It became this lighthearted take on waiting for someone else to make the first move - which, to my surprise, actually happened later that summer.
The chorus’s undeniably catchy melody - paired with endearing lyrics like “oh attends, j’ai même pas eu ton nom” (“Oh wait, I didn't even get your name”) - makes “Mais t’es où?” a standout in Goelen’s growing discography. He first performed the song live in August 2024, where, despite being his personal least favorite of the set, it quickly became the audience favorite.
“I wasn’t sure how to feel,” he laughs. “The song makes fun of me!”
The track was recorded in April 2025 with producer Brandon Barsoumian, and went through two iterations before landing on the perfect mix - authenticity that reflects Goelen’s evolving sound. Originally writing in English, the artist has found a deeper creative satisfaction working in French, saying, “It’s a whole different discipline - but it’s made me a better writer.”
Fans can expect more to come this summer, including an acoustic version of “Mais t’es où?” and additional releases in the fall and winter, exploring love in all its bittersweet forms.
